Introduction to Place-Based Digital Innovation

Digital innovation is reshaping the places where we live, work, and connect. From smarter public services to data-driven decision-making, digital technologies are creating new opportunities to tackle complex challenges and deliver meaningful change for communities. In this module, you’ll explore how digital transformation is influencing organisations, public services, and place-based systems. You’ll develop a critical understanding of how technology, people, governance, and innovation come together to create public value and improve outcomes at local, regional, and national levels. Through the themes of Governance and Management, Digital Technologies, and Ethical and Responsible Innovation, you’ll examine the principles that underpin successful digital transformation. Drawing on contemporary case studies, you’ll explore how organisations are using digital innovation to solve problems, improve services, and build more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient places. You’ll be encouraged to connect learning directly to your own professional context through reflective activities and collaborative discussion. Alongside exploring emerging technologies, innovation methods, and future trends, you’ll develop the confidence to critically evaluate digital opportunities and understand both the potential and limitations of digital solutions.

Ethics and Governance for Digital Transformation

Digital transformation has the power to create significant public value, but lasting impact depends on how technology is governed, managed, and applied responsibly. In this module, you’ll explore the governance systems, ethical frameworks, and collaborative approaches that enable organisations to deliver digital innovation that is transparent, accountable, and trusted. As digital technologies become increasingly embedded within public services and place-based systems, you’ll examine how governance, responsibility, and oversight shape successful transformation. Through contemporary frameworks and real-world examples, you’ll explore how ethical and responsible innovation can be embedded within digital strategies, stakeholder engagement, and decision-making.

You’ll consider the legal, institutional, and societal factors that influence public value creation, developing the critical skills needed to evaluate governance arrangements, identify ethical challenges, and contribute to responsible digital innovation in your own professional context. Alongside strengthening your analytical capabilities, you’ll enhance your ability to communicate complex ideas and evidence-based arguments to both academic and professional audiences.

Our online Digital Transformation and Public Value PG Cert is studied 100% online.

You’ll study through Canvas, our world-class online Learning Management System (LMS), which can be accessed from your phone, PC or tablet, at home or on the move. Canvas provides instant access to study materials, forums, and support from tutors and classmates, as well as enabling easy submission of your assignments.

On successful completion of your studies, you’ll be invited to attend a graduation ceremony on campus. If attending the ceremony in person is not possible then we’ll arrange to have your certificate sent to you.

Entry requirements

What you’ll need to start this course

You’ll need a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree.

You must have at least three years of relevant professional experience. Relevant professional experience includes working within areas such as built environment, healthcare, digital technology, policy and governance, consultancy, and third sectors.

If English is not your first language you will be expected to demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.5 (Academic level- with no individual score being lower than 5.5) or equivalent English Language qualification, as recognised by Anglia Ruskin University.

As a distance learner, you’ll also need a suitable computer with internet connection, together with sufficient IT competence to make effective use of word processing, internet, and email.

Fees

The full tuition fee for this online postgraduate certificate in digital transformation is £3,000.

The tuition fees you pay each year for the full Digital Transformation and Public Value PG Cert will be £3,000. The course is studied over 1 year.

Funding

Your masters in digital transformation can be fully funded by the Postgraduate Student Loans now available (subject to eligibility).

We offer payment by instalments, so you can spread the cost of studying with us.
