If you're passionate about your contemporary midwifery practice and want to advance your knowledge and skills, this Higher Midwifery Practice MSc is designed for you. Supported by an exceptional academic team of experienced midwives and researchers with a track record for innovative midwifery training, it develops your advanced independent thinking and enables you to apply your learning directly to clinical practice.
You will explore how to promote normality during childbirth and how to care for vulnerable women with complex needs, with the aim of reducing intervention, while optional modules support your development for leadership roles in clinical practice or research. Our strong links with midwife-practitioners in all eight NHS trusts in our region, and our engagement with international agencies such as the UK Network on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, the World Health Organisation (WHO), the White Ribbon Alliance and the London School for Health and Tropical Medicine, enrich this postgraduate midwifery course.
ARU holds a Baby-Friendly Certificate of Commitment and stage-one assessment and is working towards stage-two assessment and full accreditation, and many of our master’s level midwifery students go on to complete professional doctorates.

How you’ll be assessed
Assessment methods vary between modules and include written essays, seminar presentations with supporting papers, a research proposal and, for the Masters award, a major project of no more than 15,000 words.
All the assessment methods are designed to demonstrate the range of knowledge and skills expected of a practitioner working at an advanced level.
How you'll study
Study online and graduate on campus
Our masters in midwifery is studied 100% online.
You’ll study through Canvas, our world-class online Learning Management System (LMS), which can be accessed from your phone, pc or tablet at home or on the move. Canvas provides instant access to study materials, forums, and support from tutors and classmates, as well as enabling easy submission of your assignments.
On successful completion of your studies you’ll be invited to attend a graduation ceremony on campus. If attending the ceremony in person is not possible then we’ll arrange to have your certificate sent to you.

Fees
The full tuition fee for this midwifery masters degree is £9,000.
The tuition fees you pay each year for the full Advanced Midwifery Practice MSc will be £4,500. The course is studied over 2 years.
Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) may reduce the tuition fees. This will be confirmed once your application has been submitted. Please note that APL may affect your eligibility for a postgraduate loan.
Funding
Your online midwifery master's can be fully funded by the new Postgraduate Student Loans now available (subject to eligibility).
We offer payment by instalments, so you can spread the cost of studying with us.
For military students: You can use your ELCs towards this course. Anglia Ruskin University is a recognised ELCAS provider (number 1007). Please contact your Learning Centre for details of ELC, eligibility and how to apply.

Meet your course leader

Sara Smith, Course Leader
Having worked in local government for seven years Sara developed a passion for midwifery following the birth of her three children. She was seconded from her role as a Maternity Care Assistant to undertake her midwifery training and qualified as a midwife in 2009.
Sara has worked in all areas of maternity care, including practice development, and has always enjoyed working with students and teaching. She joined the university in the summer of 2013 as a Clinical Skills Tutor and progressed to the role of Senior Lecturer in January 2017.
Sara has an interest in how antenatal education can positively affect the experience of women in maternity services, how student midwives learn the professional role of the midwife and how medicines management knowledge and skills can be transferred from theory to practice.
Meet the team
An exceptional team of midwifery lecturers, all of whom maintain strong links with clinical practice, supports this innovative course. Not only are we able to offer a breadth and depth of expertise in advanced midwifery practice, but we also hold academic qualifications in the discipline of midwifery, supported by qualifications in anthropology, sociology and women's studies, international health, management and business administration, education, social research methods, interprofessional healthcare, primary and community care, and women's.
All lecturers are required to have a Master's degree and Postgraduate diploma in education. In addition to this many staff have completed or undertaking Doctoral study.
The research interests of the team include:
- organisational studies and the implications for professionals and care delivery,
- body image and effects on contraception,
- implications of examination of the newborn, neonatal studies including family dimension,
- all aspects of breastfeeding,
- clinicians' experiences of managing obstetric emergencies,
- historical analysis of intervention in midwifery care, and
- students' experiences of midwifery training.
The team also has a strong background of international experience working in the field of mother and child health in: Nigeria, Nepal, The Maldives, Ascension Island, Romania, Somaliland, Tajikistan, Thailand, Montenegro, Sudan and Afghanistan. We are able to offer a high degree of support to midwives from diverse situations (UK and International) seeking to develop their specialist areas of practice.

Supported distance learning

We understand that distance learning is different to traditional campus study and if you’re new to online study you may have concerns or apprehensions about studying your midwifery course online, and that’s natural.
To help put your mind at ease we have a dedicated Distance Learning Support Team to help and support you throughout your time at ARU, starting with your first online induction and staying with you right through to graduation. In addition, you’ll also be supported by specialist masters in midwifery tutors who are well experienced in distance learning student support and will provide you with a range of practical knowledge.
Once you start your masters in midwifery, we encourage the creation of online communities and many of our learners find these connections with others invaluable, helping them to stay motivated, share concerns or make new friendships.
